Early life and background
Laxmikant Berde was born on 26 October 1954 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. He grew up in a modest, middle-class household and took part in local naatak performances at community festivals, which sparked his interest in acting. While still a student he won awards in school and college acting competitions. Early work at the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh — where he sometimes helped with stage logistics — gave him regular exposure to professional theatre and led to acting opportunities.

Career
Berde began his screen career in Marathi cinema with the 1984 film Lek Chalali Sasarla, in which he appeared as Deepak Waghmare. He established himself as a leading comic performer on stage and in films, earning a Filmfare Award (Marathi) for Best Actor in 1986 for Dhum Dhadaka.

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s Berde was a familiar face in Marathi popular cinema. He achieved notable success in stage and screen comedies and became widely known for pairings with fellow actors Mahesh Kothare, Ashok Saraf and Sachin Pilgaonkar. Films that reinforced his popularity include De Danadan (1987), Thartharat (1989), Zapatlela (1993), Majha Chakula (1994) and the ensemble Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi (1989). He and Ashok Saraf formed one of Marathi cinema’s best-loved comic duos, appearing together in titles such as Bhutacha Bhau (1989), Changu Mangu (1990) and Aayatya Gharat Gharoba (1991).

Berde also worked in Hindi films, often in supporting comic roles. His Hindi debut came in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) as Manohar Singh, and he later appeared in Saajan (1991), Phool Aur Angaar (1993), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Dil Kya Kare (1999) and Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin (2004). In Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! he shared the screen with his wife Priya, playing the role of Lallu Prasad while Priya played Chameli.

On stage Berde’s breakthrough came with a major role in the Marathi play Tur Tur (1983), directed by playwright Purshottam Berde. He went on to perform in productions including Shantecha Karta Chalu Aahe, Karti Premat Padli and Uchalbangadi, explaining later that touring and performing for different audiences taught him how diverse comic reactions could be.

He sometimes used the screen name Lakshyaa in films, a name that gained traction with audiences and became an informal nickname used by his fans. A few years before his death he and his wife Priya Arun established a production company called Abhinay Arts in Mumbai.

Public profile
Berde stood about 168 cm (5 feet 6 inches) tall and had black hair and dark eyes. His work on stage and in films made him a respected comic actor in Marathi cinema and a familiar supporting performer in Hindi films. He received multiple Filmfare nominations in the Hindi awards for Best Comic Actor for Maine Pyar Kiya (1990), 100 Days (1992), Beta (1993) and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1995).

Colleagues and co-stars frequently praised Berde’s comic instincts and dedication. Fellow actor Mahesh Kothare recalled Berde’s commitment to a performance even when injured during a risky sequence, and actress Bhagyashree remembered him as a star on set whose comic timing and humility stood out.

Personal life
Berde was married twice. His first wife, Ruhi Berde, died in 1987. He later lived with and introduced his co-star Priya Arun as his wife; the couple had two children together, a son, Abhinay Berde, and a daughter, Tejaswini Berde, both of whom are actors. Among his family connections was his uncle Ravindra Berde, also an actor, and one of his elder brothers, Purshottam Berde, a noted playwright.

Death
Laxmikant Berde died on 16 December 2004 in Mumbai at the age of 50. He had been ill for several months and was undergoing dialysis; the reported cause of death was kidney failure. He was cremated at the Oshiwara Crematorium in Jogeshwari West, Mumbai, with many colleagues and friends in attendance.
