Early life and background
Leela Samson was born on 6 May 1951 in Coonoor in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. Her father, Benjamin Abraham Samson, served in the Indian Navy and later held senior postings; her mother was Laila Samson. Leela grew up in a household with two brothers and a sister. She attended Besant Theosophical High School in Varanasi and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Sophia College for Women in Mumbai.

Her early exposure to the arts came at the encouragement of her father, who sent her to Kalakshetra in Chennai for formal training when she was nine. At Kalakshetra she studied under Rukmini Devi Arundale, who became a formative influence on her approach to Bharatanatyam. Leela completed her Arangetram, the traditional debut performance for a classical dancer, in 1970 in Bombay.

Career
Leela Samson built a multi-faceted career around Bharatanatyam as a performer, choreographer, teacher and company director. In September 1995 she founded Spanda Dance Company to present her choreography and to explore varied ways of presenting the classical form. She performed widely in India and toured internationally, appearing at festivals and venues across Europe, Africa and North America. In 1985 she performed alongside her guru Rukmini Devi Arundale on a China tour.

Samson also taught dance at institutions including Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in New Delhi and led workshops and productions for other companies, such as a collaboration in 2003 with a UK dance group for a show at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Her published work includes the 1987 book Rhythm in Joy: Classical Indian Dance Traditions, and in 2010 she authored a book on Rukmini Devi. Samson’s creative practice extended into film as well: she took supporting acting roles in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu cinema, appearing as Bhavani Ganapathy in the Tamil film O Kadhal Kanmani (2015), as Charu Srivastava in the Hindi film OK Jaanu (2017), and as a psychologist in the Telugu film Shyam Singha Roy (2021). Her performance in O Kadhal Kanmani brought nominations and awards, including a Best Supporting Actress award at the Norway Tamil Film Festival and a Filmfare South nomination.

She served as Director of the Kalakshetra Foundation from April 2005 until April 2012.
