Early life and background

Leena Gandhi Tewari was born on 9 March 1957 and raised in suburban Mumbai, India. She comes from a family with deep roots in business and public life; her grandfather Vithal Balkrishna Gandhi was a social reformer, political leader and entrepreneur whose early work and experiences in Mumbai slums shaped the family’s public-minded approach.

Education played a central role in her development. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Bombay (Sydenham College of Commerce & Economics) and went on to earn an MBA from Boston University in the United States.

Career

Leena Gandhi Tewari is the chairperson of USV Pharma, a privately held pharmaceutical company that traces its origins to the work begun by her grandfather. Under the family’s stewardship USV moved from importing medicines to manufacturing, expanding into areas such as diabetic and cardiovascular treatments as well as biosimilars, injectables and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Leena has pursued writing. After seven years of research she published a biography of her grandfather in 2013 titled Beyond Pipes & Dreams – The Life of Vithal Balkrishna Gandhi. The book reflects both family history and the social influences—figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Lala Lajpat Rai—that shaped her grandfather’s life and work.

Philanthropy and public initiatives

Leena has been active in social causes, particularly those focused on the education and empowerment of girls. In 2005 she founded the Dr Sushila Gandhi Centre for Underprivileged Women, named in honor of her grandmother who practiced as a gynaecologist in the 1920s. The center offers academic instruction, dance and computer training and, according to observed outcomes, has contributed to improvements in students’ confidence, academic results and behaviour at home.

Public profile

Leena is frequently named among India’s wealthiest individuals and has appeared in Forbes magazine lists. Her public persona blends business leadership with cultural and environmental interests: she is an avid reader and writer, a dancer, and a devoted nature and wildlife enthusiast with a particular interest in reptiles.

Personal life

Leena is married to Prashant Tewari and the couple have two children, a son, Vilas Gandhi Tewari, and a daughter, Aneesha Gandhi Tewari. She describes a close family life and shared passions with her husband and children, including wildlife travel and active vacations such as trekking, skiing and safaris. Her parents are Arvind Vithal Gandhi and Dr. Pamila; she has two sisters, Sheela and Sunita.

Latest updates

Leena remains connected to USV Pharma and to the charitable initiatives she established. Her published biography of her grandfather and her ongoing involvement with the Dr Sushila Gandhi Centre continue to reflect the family’s multi-generational interest in public service and healthcare.
