Lekha Washington Biography
Lekha Washington is an Indian actress, product designer, sculptor and lyricist from Chennai. Known for both film roles across South Indian and Hindi cinema
Early life and backgroundLekha Washington was born on 30 April 1984 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in the city she calls home, she completed her schooling at Good Shepherd Convent, Chennai, and earned a degree in Fine Arts from Stella Maris College. She went on to further her design and film training at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, where she studied Lifestyle Product Design and Film and Video Communication.
Her family background is culturally diverse: her father is Kenneth and her mother is Geeta. Lekha has described herself as agnostic.
Career
Lekha’s creative life spans cinema, product design, sculpture and installation art. Her first on-screen appearance came early, with an uncredited role in the Tamil film Kadhalar Dhinam (1999). After a series of small parts and stage work, she made her Bollywood debut in Yuva (2004) and later appeared in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013) and Peter Gaya Kaam Se (2014). In regional cinema she gained notice for Brinda Sekhar in Jayam Kondaan (2008), the lead role of Sonia in the Kannada film Huduga Hudugi (2010), as Saraswathi in the Tamil film Va. (2010) and as Lasya in the Telugu film Vedam (2010). Additional credits include Kalyana Samayal Saadham (2013), Arima Nambi (2014), Kamina (Telugu, 2013) and Dynamite (Telugu, 2015).
Beyond acting, Lekha has built a significant practice in design and contemporary art. While at NID she produced short films and experimented with theatre—performing as Viola in a 2002 production of Twelfth Night and directing plays for the Khel theatre group. Her first exhibition took place in 2002 at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai, where early works explored material and form. She continued to show installations and sculptures, investigating themes from urban water scarcity to human-scale forms.
In 2011 Lekha founded Ajji—The Odd Product Company, named in tribute to her grandmother Bhavatharani Ghorpade. The studio later became Lekha Washington Studio in 2021. Her product work includes inventive furniture and lighting pieces such as The Pink Sink (for which she holds a patent), The Dot, The Drop (a collaboration with French designer Jean Francois Lesage) and a range of other designs including the Kiku Chandelier, Raven Light and Moon Dot. The Dot featured on the cover of India Today in 2013, and another piece, The Atoms, appeared on the magazine’s cover in 2016.
Lekha has shown internationally and at major Indian contemporary art events. She participated in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York in 2014 and exhibited site-specific installations at the Kochi Biennale in 2015, including a rotating moon replica titled This too shall pass. Her 2013 carved fibreglass work Soup and the large iron-sphere installation Old Love have been shown in public exhibitions in Mumbai.
She has also collaborated across disciplines: Breathing Room, made with Debanshu Bhoumik, is an interactive multimedia installation that translates viewers’ movements into light. In 2018 she worked with a luxury brand to create the Drop of Universe installation and was invited to Burning Man, showcasing Moondancer—a suspended moon replica made from a helium balloon. She returned to Burning Man in 2022 as the first Indian artist invited a second time, presenting a 20-foot fire artwork titled The Apocalypse is Breathtaking.
Public profile
Lekha has balanced a public-facing career in film and television with a studio practice and design business. She has received several recognitions for her work, including the Femina Women of the Year Award (2014), an EDIDA Award (2015) and a Good Homes Award (2016). Her studio has produced patented designs and furniture collections, and she has designed interiors for commercial projects such as the Bengaluru restaurant Social.
Lekha has been active in advocating for recognition of design authorship; in 2018 she publicly criticised an international design award after alleging that a design similar to her Pink Sink had been honoured.
Latest updates
In recent years Lekha renamed her company to Lekha Washington Studio, continued to show new installations and was selected among the Top 50 for LAGI 2021 Fly Ranch. She remains active in both art fairs and international festivals, including multiple participations at Burning Man. Her practice continues to straddle film, product design and installation art, and she maintains a studio in a renovated ancestral house in Bandra’s Ranwar village where she produces much of her work.
