Early life and background

Likith Selvaraj Prema, commonly known as Likith SP, was born on 14 August 1998 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He grew up in Bengaluru and began swimming at the age of five. His early education included time at Glenwood High School in Durban. He later studied at JAIN Deemed‑to‑be University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 2020, and went on to pursue a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership and Design at the University of Indianapolis between August 2021 and June 2023.

Physical profile and training

Likith is approximately 1.78 m (5'10") tall and around 80 kg (176 lbs). He has black hair and black eyes. He trains primarily in the breaststroke discipline and has worked with coaches including Graham Hill in 2016 and Parth Varanashi from January 2019. His training history includes stints at the Sports Federation of India camp, Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre (BAC) and Nettakallappa Aquatic Center (NAC). At the 19th Asian Games in 2023, he finished seventh in the 100‑metre breaststroke final.

JSW backed him under their Sports Excellence Program from 2016, and the GoSports Foundation supported him through the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Program. He is also AUST SWIM certified as a swimming trainer.

Outside competition, Likith has been vocal about integrity in sport. He publicly protested perceived timing irregularities at the All India Inter University Games in November 2019 and raised concerns about timing procedures at the Uzbekistan Open Swimming Championships in April 2021. His stand at the Uzbekistan event, which included a visible on‑block protest, led to an investigation by the international federation and subsequent disciplinary action against the event organisers.

Likith has engaged in community and charitable activity as well: during the initial COVID‑19 lockdown in 2020 he auctioned the race suit he wore at the 2019 World Championships to raise funds for families working in the swimming community.

He trains intensely — reporting several hours of swimming practice numerous days a week — and complements pool work with activities aimed at flexibility and balance, such as surfing, slacklining, yoga, skateboarding and acro‑yoga. Likith converted from a non‑vegetarian diet to vegetarian in 2019 and later adopted a vegan diet. He has said he draws inspiration from his father and admires athletes such as Milkha Singh.
