Lilliput (Actor) Biography

Early life and background
M.M. Faruqui was born on 3 October 1950 in Gaya, Bihar. He completed a B.Sc. at Mirza Ghalib College in his hometown. From an early age he was drawn to the stage and took part in school and college plays, a passion that later shaped his long career in theatre, television and film.

Career
After graduating, Faruqui moved to Mumbai to pursue work in the entertainment industry. He began by working in theatre both as an actor and a writer. During his early years in the city he experienced hard times while trying to establish himself, but he continued to build a reputation on stage. He adopted the screen name Lilliput—taken from Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels—after an early newspaper notice had misprinted his name in a feminine form; the new name stuck and became his professional identity.

Lilliput rose to prominence as a theatre performer in 1979 following his role in the play Ek Tha Gadha Urf Aladad Khan. He made his Hindi film debut in 1983 with Romance and followed with Grahasthi (1984), where he played a waiter. Across the 1980s and 1990s he worked in both films and television, frequently contributing as an actor and as a writer. He wrote dialogues for the 1992 film Chamatkar and worked as a writer on television projects such as Isi Bahane and Indradhanush.

On television he is remembered for the sitcom Idhar Udhar (1985–1998) in which he shared the screen with Ratna Pathak and Supriya Pathak and also contributed as a scriptwriter. He appeared in roles on Doordarshan in dramatic and fantasy series such as Vikram Aur Betaal (1985–1986) and gained praise for his performance in Dekh Bhai Dekh (1995). In 1998 he played the antagonist in the horror series Woh, a Hindi adaptation of Stephen King’s It.

Throughout his career Lilliput featured in a number of Hindi films including Saagar (1985), Hukumat (1987), Shatranj (1993), Bunty Aur Babli (2005), Enemmy (2013) and Acting Ka Bhoot (2023). He also worked in Tamil cinema, appearing in Beast (2022) where he was credited as Umar Farooq.
