Early life and background

Linthoingambi Laishram, known professionally as Lin Laishram, was born on 19 December 1985 in Imphal, Manipur. She grew up in a family where sports and education were supported: her father, Chandrasen Laishram, was involved in archery and her mother, Sorodhoni Laishram, is a doctor. Lin trained in archery at the Tata Archery Academy and was a Junior National Champion in 1998. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Sophia College, Mumbai, and later pursued acting training at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York.

Career

Lin began her career in modelling after being discovered for a college photoshoot and worked with Elite Modelling Agency. She moved to New York in 2006 and took part in fashion shows including India Fashion Week and New York Bridal Week. By 2010 she was established as a print and fashion model in New York and served as the brand ambassador for a jewellery label based there.

Alongside modelling, Lin has built a steady acting career. Her first on-screen appearance was a cameo in Om Shanti Om (2007), followed by a small role in Hattrick (2007) and Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013). She played Bem in Mary Kom (2014), appeared in Umrika (2015), and had roles in Rangoon (2017) and Qaidi Band (2017). She was part of the ensemble of Axone (2019) as Chanbi and appeared in the Amazon Prime Video series Modern Love: Mumbai (2022) as Avantika. In 2023 she played Prema Kami in the mystery thriller Jaane Jaan.

Lin has also worked in short films, including We Are Mahindra (2017) and Ave Maria (2020). In 2012 she became the first Manipuri model to appear in a swimsuit on national television when she participated in the Kingfisher calendar girl reality show. In addition to performance, she launched a jewellery label called Shamooo Sana in March 2017, designing ready-to-wear pieces she described as playful and accessible.

Lin’s family also includes a sister, Rita Laishram Lee. She uses the shorter form Lin professionally because her original name was often difficult for non-Manipuri friends and colleagues to pronounce.
