Early life and backgroundLinthoi Chanambam was born on 31 December 2006 in Mayang Imphal, Manipur. Raised in a family where sport was a part of everyday life, she spent her childhood playing football and trying her hand at boxing before concentrating on judo. Her parents, Ibohal and Guneshwori, supported her athletic interests; her father works as a fish farmer and part-time mason, and her mother as a part-time tailor and homemaker. Linthoi has two sisters and grew up in the community where judo was a popular pursuit.
Linthoi started formal training in judo in 2014 at the Mayai Lambi Sports Academy in Imphal to learn the basics. A few years later she moved to a more structured environment when she joined the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka. IIS provided a full-time training setup and resources that Linthoi credits with helping her development.
Career
Linthoi competes in the women's 57 kg category. She first began coming to national attention through domestic junior events, including the Sub-junior National Judo Championship in Una, Himachal Pradesh in 2018. From there she progressed to a string of national and international youth events.
Her international debut at a major regional event came at the Asia Oceania Cadet & Junior Judo Championship in Beirut, Lebanon in December 2021, where she won a bronze medal. That same year she won at the National Sub-Junior & Cadet Judo Championship in Chandigarh.
In 2022 Linthoi continued to build momentum. She took part in the Khelo India Youth Games in Panchkula and competed at the Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Championship in Bangkok. The highlight of her career to date came in August 2022 at the World Cadet Judo Championship in Sarajevo, Bosnia, where she won the gold medal in the women’s 57 kg event. By capturing that title she became the first Indian to win a gold medal at any age group at the World Cadet Judo Championship.
Coaching and support
Linthoi was identified by Mamuka Kizilashvili, the head coach of the judo programme at IIS, during a talent identification programme in Telangana in 2017. Kizilashvili, who is from Georgia, has coached her since then. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Inspire Institute of Sport have provided funding and support for her training and competition needs, a support network she has publicly acknowledged.

Competing at around 55 kg (approximately 121 lbs), Linthoi is known for a combative style developed through early exposure to contact sports and a competitive childhood. She has said her early sporting preferences leaned toward traditionally male-dominated sports, and that she often played and fought with boys in her hometown.
