Early life and background

Litton Das was born on 16 February 1994 in Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Raised in his hometown, he trained at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) and later attended the American International University, Bangladesh, from which he graduated. Cricket ran in the family: his older brother played and received coaching from Abu Samad Mithu, and Litton himself also developed under Mithu’s guidance.

He grew up playing with a tennis ball before moving into formal youth cricket. Litton represented Bangladesh at age-group levels, featuring for Rajshahi Under-13, Bangladesh Under-15, Bangladesh Under-19 and Bangladesh Under-23 sides as he progressed through the domestic pathway.

Career

Litton made his international debut for Bangladesh in 2015, appearing in Test, ODI and T20I formats that year. A right-handed batter who can keep wicket and bowl occasional right-arm offbreak, he became a regular in all forms of the national side and has also taken on leadership responsibilities, being named vice-captain of Bangladesh’s Test team in June 2022.

At domestic and franchise level Litton has turned out for a number of teams, including Rangpur and a string of T20 franchises: Comilla Victorians, Rajshahi Royals, Sylhet Sixers, Karachi Kings and Jamaica Tallawahs among them.

He is noted for powerful strokeplay and several significant partnerships and individual scores that feature among Bangladesh’s records. In March 2020 he recorded Bangladesh’s highest individual ODI score of 176 against Zimbabwe, and in that same match he shared a 292-run opening stand with Tamim Iqbal, the country’s highest opening partnership in ODIs. In other landmark partnerships, he and Mushfiqur Rahim put together a record sixth-wicket stand of 272 in May 2022, and he has been part of Bangladesh’s best third- and fourth-wicket ODI partnerships on other occasions. Litton’s first ODI century came in the 2018 Asia Cup final against India, and he made his maiden Test century in 2021 versus Pakistan.

Across ICC tournaments and bilateral series he has produced notable contributions: during the 2014 Under-19 World Cup he scored heavily for Bangladesh in a handful of matches; he was Bangladesh’s third-highest run-scorer at the 2019 World Cup, and he produced important T20 performances in the 2021 and 2022 ICC T20 World Cups. He also registered the fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi in T20Is on 29 March 2023.

In the 2016–17 domestic season he finished as the leading run-scorer with 752 runs in 14 matches. His tally of runs in 2022 across all formats made him the highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in a single year.

Injuries and discipline

Litton has experienced a number of setbacks through his career. He sustained a concussion in November 2019 after being struck while batting in a Test at Eden Gardens. In August 2022 he suffered a hamstring injury that was diagnosed as a two-grade muscle strain; he returned to fitness after several weeks. On the disciplinary front, during the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup he received a fine and a demerit point for conduct related to an on-field exchange.

Public profile

Off the field Litton is known for his affection for animals and for sharing related images on his social media. He observes Hindu practices and has expressed devotion to Lord Krishna. He has visible tattoos, including designs on his forearms and a tiger motif on his left shoulder. During the COVID-19 pandemic he donated half of his monthly salary to the Bangladesh government.

Personal life

Litton is married to Devashri Biswas Sonchita; the couple were wed on 27 July 2019. His parents are Bacchu Das and Anita Das, and he has a brother, Bappy Das, who has played amateur cricket. He does not have children.

Litton’s performances in recent seasons earned him national recognition: he received the Sheikh Kamal National Sports Council Award in the sports personality category in 2022, and in 2023 he was honoured with BSPA awards including Sportsperson of the Year and Cricketer of the Year (Male) for his 2022 achievements.
