Lokendra Singh Kalvi was born in 1955 in Kalvi, a village in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, into a family with a history of political involvement and landholding. His father, Kalyan Singh Kalvi, was a prominent politician who served as a Lok Sabha member and held ministerial office at the state level. Lokendra received part of his schooling in Ajmer, attending Mayo College and later Government College, Ajmer.

He belonged to the Rajput community and was a practising Hindu who frequently paid respect to Karni Mata, a tutelary deity revered by Rajputs and Charans in northwestern India.

Initial leadership of the broader Karni Sena included other activists; following internal disagreements Kalvi formed a splinter group, the Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS), and appointed new leaders to state positions.

The Samajik Nyaya Manch that Kalvi launched with an estranged BJP leader aimed to press for reservation for economically backward Rajputs. The party ran candidates in the 2003 Rajasthan assembly elections but won a single seat. Kalvi’s political alignments continued to shift in later years, with periods of engagement and disagreement with larger national parties; he sought Congress support in 2008 with conditions on ticket distribution for Rajput candidates and reportedly hoped to contest the 2009 general election on a Congress ticket, although he was not fielded.

Kalvi and the SRKS became a prominent voice in several high-profile cultural controversies. The organisation publicly opposed the 2008 film Jodhaa Akbar, asserting that the movie misrepresented historical relationships among Rajput figures and the Mughals; protests included demonstrations and legal action. In 2013, the Karni Sena campaigned against a television serial of the same name, again arguing the programme distorted Rajput history. The SRKS drew national attention in 2017 and 2018 for its campaign against the film Padmaavat, objecting to scenes the group said insulted Rajput heritage; those protests involved aggressive demonstrations and heightened tensions between activists and filmmakers.

Kalvi’s activism often intersected with state politics. He organised rallies and protests against policies of Rajasthan’s leadership and was seen as a political rival to then Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje during her first term.
