Lokesh Kanagaraj was born on 14 March 1986 in Kinathukadavu, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in the same region and completed his schooling at Palanayiammal Higher Secondary School in Kalliyapuram. He holds a graduation in fashion technology and later earned a Master of Business Administration. Before entering films, Lokesh worked in the corporate sector, including nearly five years with a private bank in Chennai.

Career

Lokesh began his filmmaking journey with short films and corporate competitions. During his college years he developed an interest in filmmaking and took part in the Clubace Short Film Festival, where his short film Acham Thavir won recognition and brought him to the attention of director Karthik Subbaraj. He directed the short film Customer Delight in 2014, which won Best Short Film at the All India Corporate Film Competition. His short Kalam, included in the anthology film Aviyal (2016), is credited as his debut short film work for the screen.
