Lovely Choubey was born on 3 August 1980 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Raised in the same city she calls home, she grew up in a family where her father worked for Central Mine Design Limited and her mother was a homemaker. Her early years were shaped by athletics: she initially competed as a 100m sprinter and in long jump before injuries forced a change of direction.

Career

Choubey transitioned to lawn bowls in 2008 after persistent hip and training-related injuries ended her athletics career. Her entry into the sport came through an invitation from Madhukant Pathak, then a cricket umpire in Bihar who encouraged her to try lawn bowls. She trained at the RK Anand Bowls Green Stadium in Ranchi and worked under coach Madhukant Pathak as she developed in the discipline.

In her national debut in 2008 she won a gold medal; that victory also earned a monetary award from the state government, which she has said motivated her to continue in the sport. Over the following years she built a steady international resume. In 2013 she won gold in mixed pairs at an Asia Pacific lawn bowls tournament. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow she represented India in Women’s Triples and Women’s Fours. That same year she secured two silver medals at the 10th Asian Lawn Bowls Championships in Women’s Pairs and Singles.

Choubey represented India again at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, where she finished fifth in her event. She is associated with the Bowling Federation of India and has been part of national team squads coached by Madhukant Pathak.

Her career reached a landmark at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Competing in the team event alongside Nayanmoni Saikia, Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey, Choubey and her teammates defeated New Zealand in the semifinal and then beat South Africa in the final to claim the gold medal on 2 August 2022. That victory marked a historic moment for Indian lawn bowls and brought widespread attention to the sport within the country.
