Early life and background

Lovepreet Singh was born on 6 September 1997 in Bal Sachander, a village in Amritsar, Punjab. He grew up in a modest household; his father, Kirpal Singh, worked as a tailor and his grandfather, Gurmej Singh, sold vegetables. Lovepreet attended local schools, including a government school in Rajasansi and D.A.V. Senior Secondary School in Amritsar, where he completed his higher secondary education.

He first became interested in weightlifting at about 13 after seeing peers lift in his neighbourhood. Financial constraints marked his early years: to support his training and help the family, he took on physical work at the Amritsar produce mandi and assisted his grandfather with selling vegetables. He also worked occasionally as a ghodiwala at weddings. Family members pooled resources to enable his continued training.

Career

Lovepreet took up more structured training under senior lifters from his village, including coach Heera Singh and Rupinder Singh. He progressed through school-level competitions and national junior events before moving into senior ranks. In 2015 he joined the Indian Navy and serves there as a Junior Commissioned Rank (SSR) Havildar, a role that supported his sporting ambitions.

Competing mainly in the 105 kg class as a junior and the 109 kg class as a senior, Lovepreet has collected a series of international and national medals. As a junior he won the 2017 Junior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in the 105 kg division with a 325 kg total. He also won national junior titles in 2016–17 and 2017–18, improving his totals across snatch and clean & jerk.

At senior level he has continued to register strong results. He lifted a 350 kg total to win the 2021–22 Senior Nationals in the 109 kg category. Internationally, he earned a silver at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent and placed 12th at the 2021 IWF World Championships in the 109 kg class with a 348 kg total.
