Early life and background

Lovlina Borgohain was born on 2 October 1997 in the Golaghat district of Assam. Raised in a family where her elder sisters practiced kickboxing at a competitive level, Lovlina began training in combat sports during her teenage years. She attended Barpathar Girls High School in Golaghat, and her early introduction to organized boxing came after trials conducted by the Sports Authority of India, where coach Padum Boro identified her potential and started coaching her in 2012.

Her family supported her ambitions despite financial constraints; her father, Tiken, ran a small business and worked to help her pursue the sport. Lovlina is the youngest of three sisters, with Licha and Lima being her elder siblings.

Career

Lovlina began as a kickboxer before transitioning to boxing under the guidance of Padum Boro and later working with coach Shiv Singh. Competing mainly in the welterweight and middleweight divisions (69 kg and 75 kg categories), she built a steady record at national and international competitions.

Her breakout results included a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Ho Chi Minh City in 2017. That same year she also earned bronze at the President’s Cup in Astana. In 2018 she won gold at the India Open in the welterweight division, a result that helped secure her a place at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Later in 2018 she claimed bronze at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, and she followed that with another World Championships bronze in Ulan-Ude, Russia, in 2019.

Lovlina qualified for the Tokyo Olympics through the 2020 Asia and Oceania Boxing Olympic qualifiers. At the Tokyo 2020 Games she reached the podium, winning a bronze medal. Her Olympic run included a defeat to the reigning world champion Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey in the later rounds.

She continued to collect medals at the continental level, taking bronze at the Asian Championships in Dubai in 2021 and winning gold at the women’s 75 kg event at the National Games in 2022. In 2023 she won gold at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, adding a world title to her list of achievements.
