Early life and background

Manoj Kumar Katiyar completed his early military education at Sainik School Ghorakhal in Uttarakhand before joining the National Defence Academy in Pune. After three years at the NDA he proceeded to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and completed his training in June 1986, when he was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment.

He continued professional military education through a series of staff and war courses. His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree from the National Defence Academy, two master’s degrees in Strategic Studies earned at the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington and the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and an MPhil in Defence and Management Studies from the National Defence College in New Delhi.

Career

Katiyar began his commissioned service in June 1986 and rose through command and staff appointments across a range of formations and postings. Early in his career he attended the Young Officer’s course at the Army War College in Mhow and served as a company commander when he held the rank of major.

As a colonel he commanded his battalion during operations in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, and in Taksing, Arunachal Pradesh. He later served at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington as an instructor and was posted to the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) in Bhutan as an instructor as well.

Promoted to brigadier, Katiyar commanded an infantry brigade focused on operations in Kashmir. He also held staff appointments as Brigadier General Staff at the headquarters of 3 Corps and at Central Command. As a major general he served at Army Headquarters in New Delhi within the Military Operations Directorate.

On elevation to lieutenant general, he commanded 1 Corps, the Army’s Strike Corps, taking over as General Officer Commanding on 5 April 2021. Following that tenure, he was appointed Director General of Military Operations, a post he held from May 2022 until June 2023. On 1 July 2023 he assumed command of the Indian Army’s Western Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, succeeding his predecessor in that role.
