Early life and background

Salman Fayyaz Ghani was born in Pakistan and pursued a military career after completing his undergraduate studies. He entered the Pakistan Military Academy as part of the 79th Long Course and, following two years of professional training, was commissioned into the Pakistan Army’s 10th Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment as a second lieutenant.

Career

Ghani progressed through a series of leadership posts during his service. Early assignments included company and battalion-level commands; over time he advanced to brigade command. After promotion to brigadier, he served at the School of Infantry and Tactics in Quetta.

In February 2017 he was promoted to major general and took command of the 23rd Infantry Division in Jhelum district, Punjab. He reached the rank of lieutenant general in November 2020. His first appointment at that rank placed him at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi as Inspector General (Arms).

Ghani later served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of IV Corps, commonly known as the Lahore Corps. His tenure as Corps Commander was notable and culminated in a high-profile incident in May 2023, when the official residence of the Lahore Corps commander in the cantonment was breached and ransacked during large-scale unrest in the city.

Following those events, the Pakistan Army announced a change of command on 12 May 2023. Lieutenant General Fayyaz Hussain Shah succeeded Ghani as the 27th Corps Commander of the Lahore Corps, and Lt. Gen. Ghani was reassigned to report to GHQ Rawalpindi as Inspector General (Arms).
