Early life and background
Triveni Singh Thakur was born on 1 February 1978 in Namkum (then in Bihar, now in Jharkhand). He spent part of his childhood in Pathankot, Punjab, where he attended St. Joseph’s Convent Secondary School. After finishing school he studied at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana and earned a BSc in Agriculture.

While at school he developed a strong interest in martial arts, competing at national-level events and winning multiple awards. He was offered an opportunity to join the Naval Academy at Khadakwasla but chose to follow his parents’ wishes and complete his agricultural degree before pursuing a military career.

Family and personal life
Triveni came from a Dogra Rajput family. His father, Janmej Singh Thakur (also recorded as Janmejaya Singh Thakur), served in the Indian Army and retired with the honorary rank of captain. His mother, Pushplata Singh, is a homemaker. He had two sisters: an elder sister Pooja, who lives in the United States, and Jyotsana, who holds an MSc and worked with the Government of Punjab.

At the time of his death he was engaged to be married; his wedding had been planned for 10 March 2004.

Career
After passing the Combined Defence Services Examination, Triveni joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun for an eighteen-month training course. He was commissioned into the 5th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI) on 8 December 2001 with the rank of lieutenant and service number IC-61417.

Following commissioning he completed the Young Officers course at the Infantry School of the Army War College and underwent additional training at the Junior Leaders Wing in Belgaum. He served as adjutant of his battalion while it was based in Jammu and took part in operational tasks in the Jammu and Kashmir area, including missions to locate and neutralize terrorists after attacks on Army units.

Action at Jammu railway station and death
On 2 January 2004, a fidayeen assault targeted the Jammu railway station. Triveni led a Quick Reaction Team in response to the attack after receiving orders from his commanding officer. At the station his team established a perimeter and engaged the attackers. At around 10:20 pm one militant hidden under a staircase opened fire and wounded a police officer; Triveni incapacitated that attacker and proceeded to search for additional threats.

He then encountered a second militant firing from an elevated bridge and throwing grenades. During the ensuing close combat Triveni sustained a gunshot wound to the lower part of his face. Despite the injury he cornered and killed the second attacker. He later died en route to hospital. Reported accounts state that while being transported a senior army commander met him; Triveni is said to have saluted and indicated the mission was complete.

Honours and remembrance
For his actions that night Triveni Singh was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry decoration. The award was presented to his family.

His memory has been preserved in a number of public tributes. A school was built in his native town by the Punjab administration. A statue in his honour was unveiled at Sunjuwan Military Station in Jammu in August 2019. In Pathankot, Punjab, Triveni Dwar was constructed in 2022 as a memorial. His story was also depicted in the 2023 Amazon miniTV Hindi series Rakshak: India’s Braves.

Triveni was widely recognized for his bravery and his sacrifice during an operation to protect civilians. Photographs of him in uniform and images of his martial arts medals have been circulated in media coverage of his life and service. He is remembered by his family, former unit colleagues, and local communities in Jammu and Pathankot.

Latest updates
In August 2019 a statue commemorating Triveni Singh was installed at Sunjuwan Military Station. Triveni Dwar in Pathankot was completed in 2022. The television portrayal of his actions appeared in 2023.
