Early life and backgroundMaqsood Mahmood Ali, known professionally as Lucky Ali, was born on 19 September 1958 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He is the son of comic actor Mehmood and Mahelaka (also known as Madhu Ali), who was the sister of actress Meena Kumari. Lucky Ali is the second of eight siblings and spent his early years in a family deeply connected to the Indian film world. He attended several schools during his youth, including Convent of Jesus and Mary and St. George's College in Mussoorie, Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai, and Bishop Cotton Boys' School in Bangalore.
Career
Lucky Ali made his first recorded contribution as a playback singer in 1978 with the song "Walking All Alone" for the film Ek Baap Chhe Bete, but he came to wide public attention much later. His debut independent album, Sunoh, released in 1996, established him as a distinctive voice in Indian pop music. The album's single "O Sanam" became extremely popular across Asia and remained among the top positions on regional music charts for an extended period.
Beyond his albums, Lucky Ali has worked as a playback singer in Bollywood and earned mainstream recognition for his song "Na Tum Jaano Na Hum" from the 2000 film Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai, which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2001. He has also taken on acting projects, making his feature film acting debut in Sur: The Melody of Life (2002).
