M. K. Alagiri Biography

Muthuvel Karunanidhi Alagiri is an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu, known for his tenure as Member of Parliament for Madurai and for serving as Union MoS

Early life and background

Muthuvel Karunanidhi Alagiri was born on 30 January 1951 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is the second son of politician M. Karunanidhi and Dayalu Ammal. He grew up in a large family that included brothers M. K. Stalin, M. K. Muthu and M. K. Tamilarasu, and sisters Kanimozhi and Selvi Geetha Kovilam. Alagiri attended Presidency College in Chennai and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Alagiri belongs to the Isai Vellalar community and was raised in a household active in Tamil Nadu politics. His early involvement in public life came under the influence of his father, and he developed an interest in politics from a young age.

Career

Alagiri built his political career within the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He was prominent in southern Tamil Nadu and played a key organizational role for the party in the region. In 2008 he helped the DMK win three by-elections, a contribution that led to his appointment as the party’s organizing secretary for the southern districts.

In the 2009 parliamentary elections he stood from the Madurai constituency and won a decisive victory, securing 430,688 votes. Following that election he entered the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, taking office on 31 May 2009. During his tenure questions were raised in the legislature about his attendance; on several occasions another minister responded to parliamentary questions on the ministry’s behalf.

Alagiri’s ministerial period and broader political activity were marked by both influence and internal party tension. He became associated with strong local support in Madurai and exercised significant clout in southern districts, but his relationship with sections of the party leadership was sometimes fraught. On 24 January 2014 the DMK removed him from the party as a member and from his post as secretary.

Public profile

Alagiri’s public life has included a number of controversies that attracted media and legal attention. He was accused in the 2003 murder of former DMK minister T. Kiruttinan; a district and sessions court acquitted him in May 2008. In 2007 and 2009 episodes connected to election-related tensions and coverage—most notably an incident in Madurai involving the Dinakaran newspaper and reports about vote-buying in Thirumangalam—heightened scrutiny of his role and the behaviour of his supporters.

Other disputes touched on allegations about land transactions and conduct as a minister, but in several instances inquiries and reporting led to clarifications or acquittals. Internal rivalry within the family, particularly between supporters of Alagiri and those aligned with his brother M. K. Stalin, was a recurring feature of his public profile and occasionally spilled into violent confrontations between supporters.

Personal life

Alagiri married Kanthi Alagiri on 10 December 1972. The couple have one son, Dayanidhi Azhagiri, and two daughters, Kayalvizhi and Anjugaselvi. He lists watching cricket as a hobby.

Physical details commonly reported in public profiles list his height at approximately 1.67 metres (5 feet 6 inches) and weight around 85 kilograms. His eye and hair colour are recorded as black.

Latest updates

Alagiri was formally removed from DMK party positions in January 2014. His father, M. Karunanidhi, passed away on 7 August 2018 after a prolonged illness. The family’s continued prominence in Tamil Nadu politics and the legacy of Karunanidhi remain part of Alagiri’s public context.
