Early life and background

Muthupettai Somu Bhaskar was born on 13 September 1957 in Muthupettai, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in the Nagapattinam area. He completed his schooling at Gopalapuram Boys School in Chennai and pursued higher studies at Pachaiyappa's College, where he finished a Pre-University course and earned a B.Com degree. From an early age he was attracted to performance work, accompanying his sister Hemamalini—who worked as a dubbing artist—to studios and learning the craft of voice work and acting.

Career

Bhaskar began his career in the entertainment industry through dubbing in 1986, which opened doors to radio and television plays for Chennai Doordarshan and All India Radio. His first film appearance came in 1987 in the Tamil movie Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi, and he made an early television mark with shows such as Nam Kudumbam in 1991.

Through the 1990s and 2000s Bhaskar became a familiar face on Tamil television, appearing in serials including Vizhudugal, Ganga Yamuna Saraswati, Mayavi Marichan, and the long-running Chinna Papa Periya Papa, which aired into 2006. He also featured in other serials such as Senior Junior, Selvi and Arasi.

On the big screen he has been cast in a wide range of supporting roles, moving comfortably between comedy and darker characters.
