Early life and background

M. V. Suchindra Kumar is an Indian Army officer who completed his schooling at Sainik School Bijapur and then undertook three years of training at the National Defence Academy, Pune. He went on to complete further professional military education at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the National Defence College in New Delhi. His academic qualifications include a bachelor's degree from the National Defence Academy, an M.Sc. in Strategic Studies from DSSC, and an M.Phil. in Defence and Management Studies from the National Defence College.

Career

Suchindra Kumar was commissioned in June 1985 into the 1st Battalion of the Assam Regiment after completing the one-year training course at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. Early in his career he completed the Young Officers and Junior Command courses at the Army War College, Mhow, and commanded a company in his battalion as a major.

Promoted through the ranks, he commanded a battalion of the Assam Regiment and later led the 59th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir, where he took part in counter-terrorist operations. He has held instructional and staff appointments including a posting at the Military Secretary Branch in New Delhi and service as an instructor at the Army War College, Mhow.

His overseas assignments have included serving as a Sector Senior Operations Officer in Cambodia under the United Nations Transitional Authority and as part of the Indian Armys training team in Lesotho. He has also attended international courses such as Cooperative Security in South Asia in Sri Lanka and the United Nations Senior Mission Leaders Course in Egypt.

After promotion to brigadier, Suchindra Kumar commanded the 120 Infantry Brigade deployed along the Line of Control and served as Brigadier General Staff of the 3 Corps (Spear Corps) in Dimapur. As a major general he commanded an infantry division along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, and subsequently served in the Military Intelligence Directorate in New Delhi as Additional Director General of Military Intelligence.

On 14 October 2020 he was promoted to lieutenant general and took over as General Officer Commanding of the White Knight Corps (XVI Corps) at Nagrota, serving in that role until 28 October 2021. On 1 March 2021 he became Colonel of the Regiment for the Assam Regiment and the Arunachal Scouts. He was appointed Director General of Military Intelligence from 28 October 2021 to 1 July 2022, and then took up the appointment of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) on 1 July 2022.

On 1 March 2023 Suchindra Kumar became the 45th Vice Chief of Army Staff. He served in that capacity until his retirement in February 2024, after which Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi succeeded him.

Honours and recognitions

Throughout his service Suchindra Kumar has received multiple decorations from the Government of India and the Indian Army. His awards include the Yudh Seva Medal (awarded twice), the Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. He has also received campaign and service medals such as the Sainya Seva Medal, Videsh Seva Medal, Special Service Medal and Samanya Seva Medal, as well as a Chief of Army Staff Commendation card. For his United Nations service he was awarded the UNTAC Medal for participation in the mission to Cambodia.

Personal life and interests

Suchindra Kumar is married to Asha Suchindra. The couple have two children: a son, Abhay, who works in the finance sector in Singapore, and a daughter, Ananya, who is a doctor pursuing further study.

To maintain fitness he practices yoga regularly and takes part in half-marathons. He is also an enthusiastic golfer. In 2020 he joined an Indian Army motorcycle expedition from Kargil to the Karakoram Pass organized to commemorate the Kargil War.
