Early life and background
Madhavrao was born on 14 February 1745 in Savnur, then part of the Maratha domains (today in Karnataka). He was the son of Nanasaheb Peshwa and Gopikabai and belonged to the Peshwa family that held de facto leadership of the Maratha Empire. As a youth he experienced the trauma of the third battle of Panipat (1761), in which his elder brother Vishwasrao and other leading Maratha commanders were killed. These losses shaped the political and military challenges he would face after assuming office.

Career
Madhavrao succeeded to the peshwaate on 23 June 1761 and ruled until his death on 18 November 1772. His brief reign is remembered for efforts to restore the Maratha position after the heavy defeat at Panipat; contemporaries and later historians credit him with reviving the power and influence of the state during that period.

Internal rivalry marked much of his time in office. His uncle Raghunathrao acted as regent early on, and relations between them deteriorated into open conflict. In 1762 Raghunathrao fled to Vadgaon Maval to raise forces and later routed an army loyal to Madhavrao. For a time Raghunathrao and his ally Sakharam Bapu exercised influence over major decisions, but Madhavrao reasserted his authority on 7 March 1763. Continued attempts by Raghunathrao to undermine him culminated in armed confrontation; Madhavrao later placed his uncle under house arrest at Shaniwar Wada.

Madhavrao was active on multiple military fronts. He engaged the Nizam in the early wars between the Nizam and the Marathas and led campaigns against the Kingdom of Mysore, defeating Hyder Ali on more than one occasion, including a campaign in 1764 and further operations into the later 1760s. In June 1770 he set out on a third campaign against Hyder Ali but fell ill during the expedition.

Madhavrao also dealt with the growing presence of the English. In December 1767 a British officer named Mastin visited Pune and expressed English interest in establishing their own force; Madhavrao declined to permit such a force.

Public profile
Throughout his rule Madhavrao faced internal plots as well as external foes. An assassination attempt against him occurred on 7 September 1769 while he was returning from the Parvati Temple in Pune; a general named Ramsingh attacked him with a sword, but Madhavrao survived the incident.

His time as Peshwa left a lasting impression on later observers. British historian James Grant Duff lamented Madhavrao’s early death as a grievous loss for the Maratha state. Within later historical memory, Madhavrao is frequently named among the notable Peshwas for his role in reversing the empire’s post-Panipat decline.

Personal life and death
Madhavrao was married to Ramabai. In 1770, during a campaign against Hyder Ali, he contracted tuberculosis. His illness forced him to abandon the campaign and return to the region of Pune. His condition deteriorated over the following years, and he died on 18 November 1772 at Theur; his remains were interred near the Ganesha Chintamani Temple in Theur, close to Pune.

His wife Ramabai is reported to have died in 1772 following the practice of sati. Madhavrao was 27 years old at the time of his death.

Legacy and portrayals
Historians credit Madhavrao with initiating the recovery of Maratha fortunes after Panipat, and his reign is often described in terms that emphasize restoration and consolidation. In popular culture his life has been dramatized; an actor portrayed him in the film Panipat directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.

Latest updates
Madhavrao’s life and short reign continue to be discussed in histories of the Maratha Empire, particularly in accounts that focus on the empire’s recovery after Panipat and the internal conflicts of the Peshwa household.
