Early life and background

Mahalakshmi Iyer was born on 11 July 1976 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a musical family, her mother Vijaya Lakshmi Iyer was a Carnatic vocalist and her father Krishnamurthy Iyer is deceased. She is the youngest among five sisters, several of whom—Padmini Roy, Shobha Ramamoorthy and Kavita Krishnamurthy—are also singers. Mahalakshmi learned Hindustani classical music from early on under teachers including Pandit Gautam Madhusudan, Pandit Ratan Mohan Sharma and Pandit Govind Prasad Jaipurwale, although she did not take a Visharad qualification.

She completed her schooling and higher education in Mumbai, attending St. Xavier’s College and graduating from R. N. Podar College of Economics. In junior college and at college festivals she performed frequently; those campus performances helped open early professional doors for her.

Career

Mahalakshmi Iyer’s professional singing path began with jingles and television theme work. Her first recorded jingle was for a Malayalam saree brand while she was in her first year of college, the result of a musician spotting her at a college festival. She went on to sing jingles in several languages, including French and Russian, and moved into film playback singing in the late 1990s.

Her earliest credited film work includes Hindi and regional songs from the mid-to-late 1990s. She recorded songs for films across languages—Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Marathi, Bengali and Odia—working with prominent composers such as A. R. Rahman and the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. During this period she sang for films including Dil Se, Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Oke Okkadu, Jodi, Mudhalvan and Alaipayuthey, and performed collaborations with singers like Udit Narayan and Hariharan.

Throughout the 2000s she continued to contribute to major Bollywood and regional soundtracks. Highlights include vocal contributions to Bunty Aur Babli, Waqt: The Race Against Time, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Fanaa, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Ta Ra Rum Pum, as well as theme songs for television serials such as Kasamm, Miley Jab Hum Tum and Aapki Antara. She recorded multiple language versions and dubbed songs into Tamil and Telugu as required by film releases.

A defining credit came in 2008, when she was one of the vocalists on Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire, composed by A. R. Rahman. That song later received a Grammy Award in 2010. In subsequent years she kept a busy schedule across film and television, contributing to projects in Marathi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati and Odia cinema, among others.

Her later work includes playback for Marathi films such as Timepass 2 and Welcome Zindagi, Gujarati film 21mu Tiffin for which she received recognition at the Rajasthan Film Festival, the Odia film Mimamsa (earning an Odisha State Award), and dubbing work for Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi into Tamil and Telugu. She also continued to appear on television soundtracks, including theme songs for serials like Aggabai Sunbai.

Public profile

Mahalakshmi Iyer is known for her versatility across languages and genres. She speaks Hindi, English, Tamil and Bengali fluently and has recorded in numerous Indian languages as well as for international ad jingles. Her musical tastes include classic Indian singers and Western acts; she has spoken of admiring Lata Mangeshkar and Michael Jackson.

Over the years she has received a number of industry honours and awards. These include state awards and film-festival recognitions for best playback singing in different regional industries, a Jury Prize at the Mirchi Music Awards, and international recognitions tied to specific projects. Her album Brindavan earned a Silver medal from the Global Music Awards in December 2022.

Latest updates

In recent years Mahalakshmi Iyer remained active in regional cinema and television. She lent her voice to the 2022 Marathi film Bebhan, received awards for her work on the Gujarati film 21mu Tiffin (2021–2022 festival season), and continued to be credited on soundtracks and television theme songs. She was invited to speak at a TEDx event in 2014, reflecting an ongoing public profile beyond recording studios.

Personal notes

Her background and early struggles are part of her public narrative: during her college admission she used her singing accolades to secure a place when her academic percentage fell short of the merit cutoff. She has also discussed modest early earnings when singing jingles. Mahalakshmi is of Tamil ethnicity, practices Hinduism, and lists cricket and artists such as Sachin Tendulkar and The Beatles among her interests.

Mahalakshmi Iyer’s career spans more than two decades and multiple languages, with a steady record of collaborations, regional awards and contributions to both film and television music.
