Mahant Nritya Gopal Das was born on 11 June 1938 in Kerhala (also recorded as Kahola) village in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. He was raised in a Brahmin family; his parents are named Ganga Ram and Ram Devi. After completing his intermediate education in 1953, he left formal schooling for a spiritual life and moved to Ayodhya to pursue religious training and practice.

In Ayodhya he became a disciple of Mahant Ram Manohar Das, the fifth head of Sri Mani Ram Das Ji Ki Chavani. Following his guru's guidance, he later earned a B.A. (Shastri) degree from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi. At age 27, in 1965, he succeeded Mahant Ram Manohar Das to become the sixth head of Sri Mani Ram Das Ji Ki Chavani.
