Early life and background

Morawakage Maheesh Theekshana (Zoysa) was born on 1 August 2000 in Sedawatta, Colombo. He grew up in the same neighbourhood and attended Samayawardhana MV for a short period before moving to Sedawatta Siddhartha Madya Maha Vidyalaya for most of his schooling. He later studied at St. Benedict’s College, Colombo, where a cricket scholarship and support from school staff and coaches helped him continue his development.

Theekshana began structured cricket training as a child, joining the Asoka de Silva School of Cricket in 2010. Early coaches and teammates played a part in his move to St. Benedict’s, and the college’s cricket programme became an important stepping stone in his path to professional cricket.

Career

A right-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler, Theekshana made his domestic T20 debut for Colts Cricket Club on 1 March 2018. He also made his List A and first-class debuts for Colts later that month and in December of the same year, respectively. He progressed through age-group and club sides, representing Colombo North under-13 and under-15 teams, Western Province North under-15, Colts Cricket Club, Sri Lanka Army Under-23, and several franchise and representative teams domestically and abroad.

After joining the Sri Lankan Army in 2020 and training with the Armed Forces side, he worked with coaches including Ajantha Mendis to develop a wide range of spin variations. That period of army service coincided with significant improvements in his fitness and on-field performance.

Theekshana made his international debut in 2021. He played his first T20 international against South Africa on 10 September 2021 and followed that with an ODI debut on 7 September 2021, also against South Africa. He took a wicket with his first ODI delivery and finished that match with four wickets for 37 runs. His Test debut came on 8 July 2022 against Australia.

In ICC events and regional tournaments Theekshana has been a regular wicket-taker. He was Sri Lanka’s second-highest wicket-taker at the 2021 T20 World Cup with eight wickets in seven matches, and he played a part in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup success in 2022, finishing the tournament with six wickets across matches that contributed to the team winning the trophy. He also recorded four-wicket hauls in other international fixtures, including in an ODI during the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.

On the franchise circuit, Theekshana established himself as a sought-after mystery spinner. He featured for the Jaffna franchise in the Lanka Premier League, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker in 2021 with 16 wickets and later being retained by Jaffna Kings. He was signed by Chennai Super Kings in the 2022 Indian Premier League auction and wore the number 61 jersey for both Sri Lanka and CSK. He took 12 wickets for CSK in the 2022 IPL season and 11 wickets in 2023. His franchise appearances also include stints with Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, Johannesburg Super Kings in SA20, Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League, Samp Army in the Abu Dhabi T10, and others.

Theekshana has a noted record in the IPL as one of the youngest bowlers to take a four-wicket haul in the competition.
