Mahendra Kapoor Biography

Mahendra Kapoor (9 January 1934 – 27 September 2008) was an Indian playback singer best known for his patriotic songs and a long association with filmmaker

Early life and background
Mahendra Kapoor was born on 9 January 1934 in Amritsar. He grew up with a strong musical influence from his mother, Shano Devi (also referred to as Shanti), and developed an early admiration for the legendary singer Mohammed Rafi. Kapoor attended St. Xavier’s School and later St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, where he took part in college theatrical productions and met peers who would go on to work in Indian cinema. During his student days he became engaged to Pravinlata (Praveen), who would become his wife.

Career
Kapoor’s professional breakthrough came after he won the Metro Murphy All-India singing competition in 1957, a contest judged by leading music figures of the time. His playback debut came with the song “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi” for the film Navrang. Over the following decades he recorded prolifically, singing in Hindi and several regional languages including Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri and Punjabi.

He became particularly identified with patriotic material, beginning with numbers such as “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola” from Shaheed (1965) and most famously “Mere Desh Ki Dharti” from Manoj Kumar’s Upkaar, which became an enduring patriotic anthem. His voice was frequently used for songs picturized on actor Manoj Kumar, and he recorded music across many genres — romantic songs, bhajans, qawwalis, naats and devotional pieces — demonstrating both range and versatility.

Throughout his career Kapoor worked on songs for notable films across several decades. Titles associated with his discography include Sangam (1964), Gumrah, Hamraaz, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Admi Aur Insaan, Doli, Ek Nazar, Shakti, Bandhan and Tawaif. He also contributed to television, notably singing verses and the title song for BR Chopra’s Mahabharat during the 1980s.

Accolades and recognition
Kapoor received a number of state and national honours. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972. Over his career he won multiple National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for songs including “Mere Desh Ki Dharti” (Upkaar) and received other industry awards such as the Mian Tansen Award, a Life Time Achievement Award (2000), the Madhya Pradesh State Award (2002) and recognition from the Dada Saheb Phalke Academy (2008). He also won state awards from Punjab and Gujarat and received the Lata Mangeshkar Award.

Public profile
Known to fans as a devotional and patriotic performer, Kapoor built a reputation as “The Voice Of Their Nation” among admirers who associated him with nationalistic songs and public performances. He recorded an extensive catalog reportedly running into tens of thousands of songs across languages, and his repertoire included popular duets such as “Akash Pe Do Taare.” He was also among the early Indian singers to record songs in English for film projects.

Personal life
Mahendra Kapoor was married to Pravinlata Kapoor and was the father of one son and three daughters. His son Ruhan (also referred to as Rohan in some accounts) Kapoor followed a career in entertainment as an actor and singer. Kapoor was a religious person with a devotion to the goddess Katyayani and sang many bhajans, including devotional pieces such as Om Namah Shivay.

Later years and death
In later life Kapoor planned to establish a music school. He remained active as a recording artist and performer for more than five decades. On 27 September 2008 he died at his home in Mumbai at age 74. His death followed complications after surgery that led to infection and cardiac failure.
