Early life and background

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7 July 1981 in Ranchi, then part of Bihar, India. Raised in a family with roots in Uttarakhand, he attended DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir in Ranchi and later enrolled at St. Xavier's College, Ranchi. His surname originally appears as 'Dhauni' in family accounts, though the public form of the name is Dhoni. As a schoolboy he was first spotted as a goalkeeper and was encouraged to try wicket-keeping, a role that would shape his professional career.

Career

Dhoni's breakthrough began in domestic cricket with strong performances for Bihar and in under-age competitions, including a prolific showing in a 2003/04 tri-nation tournament where his run-scoring marked a turning point. He made his One Day International debut for India on 23 December 2004 against Bangladesh and went on to make his Test debut on 2 December 2005 against Sri Lanka. He played his first T20 international on 1 December 2006 against South Africa.

A right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper, Dhoni became known for his unconventional but highly effective batting, including the iconic 'helicopter shot' learned from a childhood friend. He established himself as one of the game’s premier finishers in limited-overs cricket and scored an ODI high of 183, the highest by a wicket-keeper in the format.

As captain, Dhoni led India to major successes across formats. Under his leadership India reached the top of the Test rankings for an extended period, and won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. He holds numerous captaincy and wicket-keeping records: he is among the few skippers to lead in over 300 international matches, the only captain to have led more than 50 matches in each format, and he has the highest number of stumpings in international cricket. He also became the first Indian wicket-keeper to accumulate 4,000 Test runs and produced one of the highest individual scores by an Indian captain in Tests, an innings of 224.

Dhoni announced his international retirement on 15 August 2020. His last ODI appearance took place on 9 July 2019 against New Zealand at Emirates Old Trafford; his final Test match was on 26 December 2014 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground; and his last T20 international appearance was on 27 February 2019 against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium. In domestic and franchise cricket he has represented teams including Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Jharkhand and others, wearing the familiar jersey number 7.

Across his career Dhoni has been the recipient of India's high civilian and sporting honours. He won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2007, the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2018. His individual awards include back-to-back ICC ODI Player of the Year honours and recognition for spirit and leadership on the international stage. He was voted MTV Youth Icon and later inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
