Early life and backgroundMahesh Iranagouda Kumathalli was born on 24 August 1962 in Telasang village in Athani taluk, Karnataka. The eldest child in his family, he completed a Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering from KLE Dr MS Sheshgiri College of Engineering & Technology, Belgaum, in 1986. He hails from a Panchamasali Lingayat family and lives in Athani, Belagavi district.
Kumathalli's parents are Iranagouda Kumathalli, who worked as an engineer, and Sumitra Iranagouda Kumathalli. He has two brothers and two sisters; among his siblings are Prakash Kumathalli, a doctor, and Kanteshwari Kumathalli, who serves as a dean at Shri Aurobindo Dental College in Indore. He is married to Savita Mahesh, and the couple have a son, Rajat Kumathalli.
Career
Kumathalli trained as a civil engineer but built his public profile as a politician. He first contested the Athani assembly seat in 2013 as a candidate of the Indian National Congress (INC) but was not successful. He remained with the INC through the 2018 state elections and won the Athani seat that year.
In 2019 Kumathalli was among a group of legislators whose change of allegiance contributed to the collapse of the HD Kumaraswamy-led coalition government in Karnataka. The Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly subsequently disqualified him under anti-defection provisions, a ruling that he and others challenged in the Supreme Court. The court upheld the disqualification but allowed the MLAs to contest elections. Later in 2019 Kumathalli contested and won the Athani seat on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket in bye-elections.
Kumathalli continued his electoral career with the BJP through the following years. In the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, he again stood for the Athani seat on a BJP ticket but was defeated by Laxman Savadi, who contested that election on an INC ticket.
