Early life and background

Mahesh Mangaonkar was born on 23 March 1994 in Mumbai, India. Raised by his parents Dayanand and Anjali, he moved to Europe at age 19 to pursue his squash career and has spent significant time living and training in Finland. He completed a Bachelor of Business Administration from Häme University of Applied Sciences in Hämeenlinna, Southern Finland in 2021.

Career

Mangaonkar emerged as a promising junior, claiming the British Junior Open title in the Under-15 category in 2009. He turned professional when he joined the Professional Squash Association (PSA) in January 2012 and made his debut on the PSA World Tour as a teenager. Early in his pro career he captured his first PSA World Tour title at the Prague Open in the Czech Republic.

Over the next decade he added multiple international successes to his record. He won the IMET Open by beating Greg Lobban in the final and also secured the Sekisui Open title in Kriens, Switzerland in 2016. On the domestic front, he took the 76th Senior National Squash Championship crown in Pune in June 2019 by defeating Abhishek Pradhan.

Mangaonkar has been a regular member of India’s national squad. He was part of the Indian men’s team that won gold at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and again contributed to India’s gold-medal performance at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. During the 2022 PSA World Tour he produced one of his best career performances by reaching the top 16 of a platinum-level event.

In Europe he has appeared for clubs across many national leagues, including the Dutch, English, Czech, Swedish, Finnish, Italian, German, and French leagues. After more than three years of residency in Finland he became eligible to compete in the Finnish National Championship and won that title in 2022. He also works as a professional sparring player for several European federations.

Coaching, roles and later activities

Beyond competing, Mangaonkar has developed a coaching and fitness profile. He has been coached in squash by Sebastian Weenik and has worked with fitness coach Pierre Macon. In September 2020 he began working as a Level 1 trainer at CrossFit Finland. In June 2022 he took on a part-time coaching role with the men’s national team at the Finnish Squash Association. He is also listed as the Head of Sports for Norges Squashforbund in Oslo, Norway.

Personal profile and other notes

Physically, he is listed at about 178 cm (5'10") and 75 kg (165 lbs). He has black hair and black eyes. Outside the court he has interests that include mountaineering; he has described climbing a 6,150 m peak in Leh as one of the most dangerous things he has done. He primarily uses Prince Sports racquets.

Mangaonkar has faced setbacks from injury as well: an issue that began in 2018 worsened after the 2019 Tournament of Champions in New York and led to treatment in February 2020. Academically and professionally he has continued to pursue projects in Finland, joining CalevaLAB as a thesis student in May 2023.

Public profile

Mahesh Mangaonkar is married to Maarit; the couple’s marriage was recorded in February 2023. He lists his hometown as Helsinki and identifies his nationality as Indian. He has identified his mother as a significant source of support throughout his career. Among his stated ambitions is competing in the Olympics and aiming for an Olympic medal, noting the International Olympic Committee’s recommendation in October 2023 for squash’s inclusion in the 2028 Games.
