Mahie Gill was born on 19 December 1975 in Chandigarh, India. Raised in a Jatt-Sikh family as the only daughter, she attended St. Kabir Public School and went on to study at Government College for Girls and Panjab University in Chandigarh. She completed a Bachelor of Arts with studies in psychology, English and sociology and later earned a master's degree in theatre. Her early adult life included a period of selection for training at the Officers Training Academy, but she left that path after sustaining an injury during practice.

Gill began her screen career in regional cinema, making her debut in the Punjabi film Hawayein in 2003.
