Mahika Gaur Biography
Mahika Gaur is a young English left-arm fast-medium bowling allrounder who has represented both the UAE and England at international level. Born in 2006, G
Early life and backgroundMahika Gaur was born on 9 March 2006 in Reading, Berkshire, England and grew up partly in Lancashire. She spent part of her childhood in Dubai after moving there at age eight, and attended Dubai College before later taking up a full scholarship at Sedbergh School in England.
Her family has roots in Rajasthan, India. A trip to Jaipur as a child — where she watched an Indian Premier League match — helped spark her interest in cricket. She began training at the ICC Academy in Dubai and developed into a left-arm fast-medium bowler who also bats right-handed.
Career
Gaur emerged on the international scene at an unusually young age. She made her T20 International debut for the United Arab Emirates in January 2019 when she was just 12 years old. Over the following years she represented the UAE in multiple regional and global qualifiers, including the 2019 ICC Women’s Qualifier Asia, the 2021 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, the 2022 GCC Women’s Gulf Cup, and the 2023 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
At the 2022 ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup Asia qualifiers Gaur produced standout bowling performances. In one match she took five wickets for two runs in four overs as Nepal were dismissed for eight, earning Player of the Match honours. In another game she recorded a four-wicket haul — including a hat trick — against Malaysia and was again named Player of the Match. She finished the tournament as the second-highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets at an average of 2.36.
Her strong performances for UAE and at showcase events drew attention from English domestic coaches. Gaur began playing in the English domestic circuit, turning out for Cumbria and being selected for North West Thunder. She joined Manchester Originals for The Hundred in 2022, becoming one of the competition’s youngest participants at 16. In July 2022 she took 3 for 25 for North West Thunder against Northern Diamonds. She secured a place in Thunder’s full squad for the 2023 season and made her senior debut for the side in 2023 against Western Storm, finishing with figures of 3 for 39.
In addition to domestic cricket, Gaur was involved in franchise and invitational cricket, appearing for Team Spirit in the 2023 FairBreak Invitational T20 USA.
International switch and England debut
After representing the UAE in 19 T20 internationals, Gaur progressed through England’s development pathway. She was selected for England A to play Australia A in 2023 and in August 2023 was named in the England squad to play Sri Lanka. Gaur made her Women’s One Day International debut for England on 9 September 2023 against Sri Lanka at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. She claimed three wickets in that match, including the prized wicket of Chamari Athapaththu, and was awarded Player of the Match with bowling figures of 6.2-0-26-3.
Public profile
Physically, Gaur stands 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in). She has black eyes and black hair. She bowls left-arm fast-medium and bats right-handed. Her England shirt carries the number 68, while she previously wore number 39 for the UAE.
Gaur has spoken about the influence of her father on her love of cricket; he also played university cricket and was a left-arm fast bowler. She grew up admiring bowlers and also names Mitchell Starc and MS Dhoni among players she looked up to.
Latest updates
In mid-2023 Gaur signed a part-time professional contract with North West Thunder through the end of the 2024 season. She continued to split time between domestic commitments with Thunder and representative duties, including her early senior appearances for England.
