Early life and background

Deependra Singh Sengar was born on 28 September 1970 in Madhya Pradesh. He developed an early interest in the armed forces and went on to attend Sainik School, Rewa before joining the National Defence Academy, graduating in 1990. Physically slight in build during his training, he nevertheless pushed through the challenges of military life and developed new skills, including platform diving, in which he won a gold medal within months of learning to swim.

Military service and injuries

Sengar served in the Indian Army from 1991 until 2001, reaching the rank of Major. He served in demanding environments, including high-altitude postings such as Siachen and operational deployments against militants. During his service he was involved in combat incidents that resulted in serious injuries. In 1998, while participating in an anti-Naxalite operation in Assam, he was shot in the abdomen; after multiple surgeries he returned to duty sooner than doctors initially expected. In September 1999, a further exchange of fire left him with a shattered hip and dependent on a wheelchair for a time. Medical advice after that injury suggested he might not walk again.

Despite the injuries, Sengar received multiple decorations for his service, including the Sena Medal for his role in intercepting militants in Assam in 1999 and a Gallantry award among a total of twelve honours noted for his military record. Facing a long recovery and limited prospects for front-line soldiering, he chose to leave the Army in 2001 due to physical disability and explore a new career path.

Education and corporate career

After leaving the Army, Sengar prepared for and cleared the Common Admission Test (CAT) and enrolled at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, where he completed a Master of Management. He later pursued a Master of Management program at the University of British Columbia.

Sengar began his corporate journey with an internship at Lehman Brothers in Tokyo. He joined Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories in Hyderabad in 2003 as a manager and later became an associate director overseeing HR operations for a business unit. He moved into media and technology roles thereafter, holding a position at IBN in 2009 and later joining Microsoft. As of 2021 he was working in the Greater Seattle area as a Project Manager focused on business strategy and programs.

Personal life

Sengar is married to Jaya Sengar. He and his wife have two sons, Gyanendra Sengar and Hanut Sengar. His mother is named Mayarani Sengar. He is identified with Hinduism and the Rajput community.

Throughout his life Sengar has been noted for resilience in the face of severe injury and for reinventing himself professionally after his military career ended.
