Early life and backgroundMohit Sharma was born on 13 January 1978 in Rohtak, Haryana. He completed his schooling at several institutions, including Manav Sthali School (South Extension, Delhi), Holy Angels' School (Sahibabad) and Delhi Public School, Ghaziabad, where he finished his studies in 1995. After an initial enrollment at Sant Gajanan Maharaj College of Engineering, he pursued his ambition to join the armed forces and gained admission to the National Defence Academy in Pune.
At the NDA he distinguished himself academically and in extracurricular activities, later moving on to the Indian Military Academy in 1998. While at the IMA he served as Battalion Cadet Adjutant, a reflection of his strong performance during training. He married Rishima Sharma before his death.
Career
Mohit Sharma was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1999 and was posted to the 5th Battalion, The Madras Regiment, as a lieutenant. After three years of service he volunteered for Para (Special Forces) training and became a qualified Para Commando in June 2003. He was promoted to captain in December 2003 and to major in December 2005.
During his years of service he operated extensively in Jammu & Kashmir. In 2004 he undertook an undercover mission to infiltrate members of a militant group in Shopian, where he gathered actionable intelligence by establishing a covert identity and embedding with hostile elements. His actions during operations in the region earned him the Sena Medal in 2005.
Following that recognition he served as an instructor in Belgaum, training other commandos, and later returned to operational duty in Kashmir. On 21 March 2009, while leading the Bravo Assault Team in dense Haphruda (Hafruda) Forest in the Kupwara sector, he and his team engaged infiltrating terrorists. During the encounter several of his commandos were wounded. Despite intense fire, he recovered injured soldiers, used grenades to neutralize attackers and continued to direct his team. He was shot and mortally wounded while charging in close-quarters combat. He was 31 years old at the time of his death.
Awards and recognition
For his long record of courageous service and for the actions on 21 March 2009, Mohit Sharma had already been decorated with the Sena Medal in 2005. The Government of India posthumously awarded him the Ashoka Chakra, the nation's highest peacetime gallantry decoration, announced on 15 August 2009. His widow, Major Rishima Sharma, received the Ashoka Chakra on his behalf from the President of India on 26 January 2010.
