Malala Yousafzai Biography

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for girls' education, known worldwide for her advocacy after surviving an assassination attempt in 2012. Born in 1

Early life and background

Malala Yousafzai was born on 12 July 1997 in Mingora, a town in Pakistan’s Swat district. She grew up in a family deeply involved in education: her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, ran schools in the area and played a central role in her early schooling. Malala attended Khushal Girls High School in Swat before later studying at Edgbaston High School in Birmingham, England after relocating for medical treatment and recovery.

She comes from a Pashtun, Sunni Muslim background and was raised in Mingora. From a young age she was encouraged by her father to read, travel, and take an interest in public affairs. She has two brothers, Khushal and Atal, and her mother is Toor Pekai Yousafzai.

Career

Malala rose to public attention through her writings and public speaking about girls’ right to education. In early 2009 she began contributing anonymously to a BBC Urdu blog under the pen name Gul Makai, describing life under the increasing influence of the Taliban in Swat. Her blogging, television appearances and local speeches brought her recognition within Pakistan and beyond.

Her advocacy work continued even as the security situation in Swat deteriorated. After the Second Battle of Swat in 2009 Malala and her family were displaced temporarily. She later became active as a peer educator with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting’s Open Minds Pakistan program.

In October 2012, Malala survived a targeted shooting by a Taliban gunman while travelling home from school. She sustained severe injuries to her head, neck and shoulder, underwent emergency surgery in Pakistan and was then transferred to the United Kingdom for further treatment. Her recovery included reconstructive surgery and a cochlear implant procedure in early 2013.

Following the attack, Malala’s profile rose internationally. She addressed the United Nations on 12 July 2013 at an event that became known as “Malala Day,” calling for global access to education. She and her father began organizing efforts that became the Malala Fund, aimed at helping girls go to school.

Malala has received a long list of awards and honours in recognition of her advocacy. These include Pakistan’s National Youth Peace Prize (later renamed in her honour), the Sitara-e-Shujaat, the International Children’s Peace Prize, the Clinton Global Citizen Award, Pride of Britain, and honorary Canadian citizenship. In 2014 she was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the youngest Nobel laureate. She was also appointed the youngest-ever United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2017.

Her memoir, I Am Malala, co-written with journalist Christina Lamb, was published in October 2013. The audio version of the book won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album. On her 18th birthday she opened a school for Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon funded by the Malala Fund. She also made a brief screen appearance with a cameo in season 2 of the British sitcom We Are Lady Parts.

Public profile

Malala’s advocacy has generated strong international support as well as severe backlash from the militants who opposed her work. High-profile political leaders and public figures condemned the 2012 attack and expressed solidarity while other elements labelled her a target. Her experiences and voice have made her a focal point in conversations about education, human rights and the rights of girls globally.

She has met prominent world leaders and public figures, including meetings with the British monarch and the President of the United States. Her name has been commemorated in various ways, including the naming of asteroid 316201 Malala.

Latest updates

Malala is married to Asser Malik; their marriage took place on 9 November 2021. As of 2024 she is 27 years old and is resident in Birmingham, England.
