Malavika Avinash was born on 28 January 1976 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil family. She began formal training in Bharatanatyam at a very young age and later studied sitar as well, nurturing parallel interests in dance, music and the performing arts. Academically she pursued a law degree at Bangalore University, where she finished with high distinction in her class.
