Early life and background

Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka was born on 15 June 1961 in Wyra, in what is now the state of Telangana. He grew up in the village of Snanala Laxmipuram in Wyra Mandal, Khammam district. He completed his undergraduate studies at Nizam College, Osmania University, and went on to earn a Master of Arts in history from the University of Hyderabad in 1986.

Career

Bhatti Vikramarka’s public life has combined political work, social activity and agricultural interests. He has been associated with the Indian National Congress for decades and held internal party posts including executive membership of the Pradesh Congress Committee in the early 1990s and a term as PCC secretary in the early 2000s.

He first entered legislative politics as a Member of the Legislative Council representing Khammam and later moved to electoral politics in the assembly. In 2009 he won the Madhira assembly seat and that year was appointed Chief Whip for the Andhra Pradesh government, a post he held until 2011. From 2011 to 2014 he served as Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

After the creation of Telangana, Bhatti Vikramarka continued his electoral success in Madhira. He was re-elected as MLA in 2014 and again in 2018, becoming only the second person after Bodepudi Venkateswara Rao to win three consecutive terms from that constituency. In 2019 he was chosen as leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Telangana Assembly and served as Leader of the Opposition from 18 January to 6 June 2019.

On 7 December 2023 he took the oath as Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana. His swearing-in at L.B. Stadium in Hyderabad marked his elevation to one of the state’s top executive posts.
