Early life and backgroundMuhammad Kutty Ismail Paniparambil, widely known as Mammootty, was born on 7 September 1951 in Chandiroor, Alappuzha, Kerala. He grew up in a family rooted in Kerala — his father Ismail Panaparambil worked as a farmer and his mother was Fatima Panaparambil. Mammootty is one of six siblings, with three younger sisters (Ameena/Naseema, Sauda and Shafina) and two younger brothers (Ibrahim and Zakariah). He spent his childhood and schooling in Kerala, attending institutions such as Govt. High School, Kulasekharamangalam, St. Albert's School and Government School in Ernakulam.
He pursued higher education at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, and later studied at Government Law College, Ernakulam. Mammootty completed an LLB and for a time practised law in Manjeri court before turning fully to acting.
Career
Mammootty made his film debut in 1971 with Anubhavangal Paalichakal. Over the decades he established himself as a principal figure in Malayalam cinema while also acting in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, English and Kannada films. He is credited with appearing in more than 330 films and has been described as one of the busiest actors in the Malayalam film industry across several decades.
His body of work has been recognised with multiple national honours: he has won the National Film Award three times, and in 1998 he received the Padma Shri. Later career milestones include his portrayal of B. R. Ambedkar in the English-language film Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He has also taken on production and distribution roles in the industry through his company, Mammootty Technotainment.
Mammootty has demonstrated range as an actor, including taking on double roles in more than 15 films.
