Early life and background

Manava Arun Naik was born on 8 September 1983 in Mumbai, where she was raised and educated. She completed a BA in English Literature at Ramnarain Ruia College and went on to earn a Masters in Marketing Management from the University of Mumbai. She also pursued filmmaking and digital media studies at the New York Film Academy. Her parents are Arun Naik, a theatre critic and translator, and Meena Naik, who works as an actress, director, writer, puppeteer and social activist. Manava attended St. Joseph's Convent High School in Mumbai.

Career

Manava Naik began performing at a young age, taking part in puppet shows and children's plays while at school. Her onscreen career started in Marathi television: she debuted as Anushka Joshi in the serial Abhalmaya in 1999, a show that ran for three years. Early television roles in Hindi drama followed, including appearances in Khichdi (2002), Special Squad (2005) and Baa Bahoo Aur Baby (2005). She also played Manjeet in the Zee TV serial Teen Bahuraaniyaan in 2007.

Her film debut in Hindi came with a small role in the historical feature Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and she entered Marathi cinema with Kshanbhar Vishranti (2010). Over the next decade she worked across Marathi film and theatre, appearing in titles such as Fakt Ladh Mhana (2011), No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey (2012), Candle March (2014), Dhinchak Enterprise (2016), Langar (2012) and Jaundya Na Balasaheb (2016). She has also taken leading stage roles, for example in the Marathi plays Hamidabaichi Kothi (2011), All The Best (2012), and a Marathi production of Hamlet in which she portrayed Ophelia in 2018.

Behind the camera, Manava has expanded into production, founding the production company Strawberri Pictures and directing the Marathi film Por Bazaar in 2014. She has taken production and creative roles on several contemporary Hindi-language streaming projects: credited as an X-ray producer on Mirzapur (2018), The Family Man (2019), Four More Shots Please (2020) and Paatal Lok (2020), as well as serving as X-ray creative director on the television series Tandav (2021). In 2023 she worked in the camera and electrical department for the web series Dahaad.

Her more recent on-screen acting includes the historical film Shivpratap Garudjhep (2022), in which she portrayed Soyra Bai, and participation in stage productions such as Kali Rani, for which she received a nomination at the 2023 MaTa Sanman.
