Early life and backgroundMandip Kaur Gill was born on 5 January 1988 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, and grew up in the Middleton area of West Yorkshire. During her teens the family moved to the semi-rural village of Allerton Bywater. She attended Cockburn School and Brigshaw High School before studying performing arts at Park Lane College in Leeds and later completing a BA (Hons) in acting at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.
Gill comes from a British Sikh background and has described her food preferences as non-vegetarian. She has five sisters and one brother; her parents have kept a low public profile. A small tattoo of a heart and three dots is inked on her left arm.
Career
Gill began her acting career in theatre, appearing in a range of stage productions in the late 2000s and 2010s. Early credits include productions such as The Secret Life of John Cooper Clarke (2009) and Not In My Name (2010), and she continued to work on stage in plays including Britannia Waves the Rules (2015), Deepa the Saint (2016) and the later production 2:22 A Ghost Story (2022).
Her on-screen break came in 2012 when she secured a role on the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, playing Phoebe McQueen. From that foothold she went on to appear in supporting television roles, including parts in Casualty, Love, Lies and Records and two episodes of The Good Karma Hospital in 2017.
Gill’s profile rose significantly when she took on the role of Yasmin Khan in the BBC series Doctor Who, beginning in 2018. The part brought her wider recognition and several awards and nominations: she received a Best Newcomer award at the I Talk Telly Awards (2018), a Breakout Talent Award at the Radio Times Readers’ Awards (2018), and a People’s Choice Award at the Eastern Eye Arts, Culture & Theatre Awards (2019) for her work associated with Doctor Who.
Alongside television, Gill has continued work in film and short projects. She appeared in the feature Flood (2019) as Reema, played Charlie in the award-winning short Rwd/Fwd (2016), and featured in the short film On Air (2021), for which she won a Best Actress award at the TweetFest Film Festival’s Panel Awards. In 2020 she performed in the interactive film Five Dates as Shaina. In 2022 she appeared in a supporting role as Sonia Chopra in the Apple TV+ miniseries Suspicion, an English-language adaptation of an Israeli series.
Public profile
Gill has spoken publicly about the kinds of roles available to Asian actors and welcomed the rise of non-race-specific casting, while acknowledging there is more progress to be made. She has also discussed how she approaches roles when her own Sikh identity intersects with characters, explaining she considers potential effects on family and community when deciding which parts to accept.
She has been vocal on social media about media she disagrees with; for example, she criticized the Netflix reality series Indian Matchmaking after watching the show. Gill has said she briefly considered becoming a police officer in her youth but ultimately decided that path was not for her. Early in her career she auditioned for two years without success and has described how the breakthrough with Hollyoaks in 2012 came after a difficult period of self-doubt.
