Early life and backgroundManeka Gandhi was born on 26 August 1956 in New Delhi. She grew up in the capital and attended Lawrence School, Sanawar, before going on to study at Lady Shri Ram College for Women. She later pursued studies in German at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Maneka comes from a family headed by Lt. Col. Tarlochan Singh Anand and Amteshwar Anand.
She married Sanjay Gandhi in September 1974. The couple’s only child, Varun Gandhi, was born in March 1980. Sanjay Gandhi died later that year in an aviation accident, an event that marked a turning point in Maneka’s personal life and public role.
Career
Maneka Gandhi built a public profile that spans politics, environmental advocacy and animal welfare. In 1983 she launched the Rashtriya Sanjay Manch, a regional political vehicle that won four of five seats it contested in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections that year. She stood against Rajiv Gandhi in the 1984 Lok Sabha contest from Amethi but was defeated.
In 1988 Maneka merged her party into Janata Dal and became the party’s general secretary. The following year she won election to the 9th Lok Sabha and was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Environment, a role she held until 1991.
She established People for Animals in 1992; the organisation has since become a major platform for animal welfare in India, and she remains its chairperson. Maneka contested the Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat as an independent in 1996 and again in 1998, winning both times. After supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition, she served as Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment in 1999.
Maneka and her son formally joined the BJP in 2004. She continued to represent Pilibhit in the Lok Sabha and later served in the Narendra Modi cabinet as Union Minister for Women and Child Development following the 2014 general election. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election she contested from Sultanpur and retained a parliamentary seat by a narrow margin.
