Aiyar lost his father at a young age and was educated in Dehradun at Welham Boys' School and The Doon School. He read economics at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and later at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he completed postgraduate study in economics and was active in student political life.

Career

He resigned from the civil service in 1989 to pursue a career in politics and public life.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Mayiladuthurai constituency of Tamil Nadu in 1991, 1999 and 2004. He became India’s first minister for Panchayati Raj, and also served as Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Minister for the Development of the North-Eastern Region during that period. Later he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in March 2010 and served on parliamentary committees including the Committee on Rural Development and the Parliamentary Forum on Disaster Management.

Outside of elected office, Aiyar has been an active writer and columnist.
