Early life and background

Manik Saha was born on 8 January 1953 in Agartala, Tripura. He completed his schooling in his home state before moving to Patna for professional studies. In 1982 he earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the Government Dental College in Patna. He later pursued postgraduate training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at King George's Medical College in Lucknow, completing a Master of Dental Surgery in the early 1990s.

Career

After finishing his postgraduate studies in 1994, Saha returned to Tripura and joined the state health services. He served as a senior dental surgeon at Tripura Dental Health Service and held academic posts including professor and head of department at BR Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital in Agartala. He also worked as a teacher at Tripura Medical College in Hapania during his medical and academic career.

Saha transitioned into active politics after a career in dentistry and medical education. Initially affiliated with the Indian National Congress, he left that party in 2016 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party the same year. He rose through the BJP's state organization and became president of the BJP in Tripura in 2020. Under his leadership as state party president, the BJP won major local electoral contests, including a strong performance in civic body polls and a large-scale membership drive that enrolled hundreds of thousands of new members.

In 2022 Saha was elected to the Rajya Sabha as Tripura's representative. Following state political developments, he became the 11th Chief Minister of Tripura. He took oath as chief minister on 8 March 2023 for a subsequent term. His appointment drew visible reactions within party ranks at the time.
