Manish Narwal Biography
Indian para pistol shooter Manish Narwal rose from a small Haryana village to become one of the country's leading SH1-class shooters. A Paralympic gold med
Early life and backgroundManish Narwal was born on 17 October 2001 in Faridabad, Haryana, and grew up in Kathura village in Sonepat. Born with a right-arm disability that limits movement, he discovered early on that everyday activities and sports would require adaptation. He attended Kundan Green Valley School in Faridabad and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Faridabad College.
Manish comes from a middle-class family. His parents, Dilbagh Singh Narwal and Santosh Narwal, supported his early steps into sport. A family friend suggested shooting as an option in 2016, and his father borrowed money to buy him an air pistol so he could train at the 10X Shooting Academy in Ballabhgarh.
Career
Narwal started learning to shoot left-handed because his right arm could not provide the necessary support. His first coach, Rakesh Thakur, remembers a shy thirteen-year-old who needed time to adapt to training and to build the specific technique his disability demanded. Training was rigorous: early mornings, long practice sessions and a willingness to push through the extra work required to master balance and stability with one functional arm.
He broke into the international scene as a teenager. In November 2017 he won gold in the P1 — 10m Air Pistol Men SH1 at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Bangkok. That success was followed by a silver medal at the Al Ain World Cup in March 2018 and multiple national and international podium finishes over the next years.
At the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Narwal won gold in the Men’s Para Shooting 10m Air Pistol and set a junior world record. He also took silver in the P4 — Mixed 50m Free Pistol, and his performances helped India secure a Paralympic quota for Tokyo.
2019 brought further medals, including golds in P1, P4 and P6 team events and an individual silver at the World Cup in Croatia, and a trio of bronze medals at the World Para-Shooting Championships in Sydney. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 interrupted competition, but Narwal continued training through the shutdowns.
In 2021 he set a new world-record mark at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Al Ain, winning gold in the mixed 50m pistol SH1 individual event with a final-score performance that bettered the previous record. He also earned team silver in the P4 mixed 50m pistol event alongside teammates Singhraj Adhana and Rahul Jakhar.
His career reached a new peak at the Tokyo Paralympics (officially the 2020 Games, held in 2021), when he won gold in the Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 final. After an opening result outside the medals in the 10m air pistol, Narwal recovered to produce a composed finals performance and claim India’s top podium spot in the 50m mixed event.
Continuing his international success, Narwal added a silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Public profile
Narwal’s Paralympic gold triggered large celebrations in his home village. Haryana’s chief minister announced a financial reward and a government job in recognition of his achievement. His emergence as a Paralympic champion earned him national attention and public welcome upon his return to India.
Throughout his career he has credited coaches Rakesh Thakur and Jai Prakash Nautiyal for technical guidance, and he has acknowledged his family’s encouragement as fundamental to his progress. He has expressed clear ambition about a long competitive future in para-shooting and the potential to compete across multiple Paralympic cycles.
