Early life and background

Manish Tripathi was born on 15 May 1988 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in the city he still lists as his hometown, he attended City Montessori School before studying fashion design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion and apparel design.

Career

Tripathi built a diverse career that spans commercial fashion labels, institutional design partnerships, and public‑facing campaigns for traditional Indian textiles. In 2013 he founded Muktir Fashion India Private Limited and later launched other fashion ventures including DesignMee, along with the AntarDesi and Naveli labels. He opened AntarDESI and Naveli stores in Chattarpur, New Delhi in May 2018.

His work has included costume design for film and sport. In 2017, his DesignMee team created costumes for the Bollywood film Indu Sarkar. He has designed apparel for cricketers and sporting events: he produced uniforms for the Indian cricket team in 2018, created jerseys for the Ferit Cricket Bash league in December 2018, and has designed outfits for athletes including Virender Sehwag.

Tripathi has also worked with major Indian institutions. He has served as the official designer for the IPL Governing Council, been a design partner of the BCCI, and acted as an adviser in the Ministry of Textiles. He took part in discussions about modernising Khadi in 2019 and began advocating for Khadi and local textiles from mid‑2018 onward.

During the COVID‑19 pandemic Tripathi launched the Namastay Away brand to produce reusable Khadi masks. That initiative combined sales through platforms such as MensXP and Amazon with a social campaign that distributed masks to underserved communities. As demand grew, he expanded production and employment opportunities for women and migrant workers through a project he named Shehar Se Gaon Tak, which reportedly generated tens of thousands of jobs for rural women and artisans by mid‑2020. In December 2020 he organised a project to build what he described as the world’s largest mask, using 100 square metres of cloth sourced from various Indian states.

In recent years Tripathi’s commissions have included uniforms for the Indian Army in January 2022, ceremonial attire for India’s Asian Games contingent in Hangzhou in September 2023, and outfits for the National Sports & Adventure Awards in January 2024. He is also credited with designing the garment used to dress the idol of Lord Rama for the consecration ceremony at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya in January 2024, a project he described as profoundly meaningful.
