Early life and background

Manmohan Singh was born in Neza Dela Kalan in the Sirsa district of Haryana. From a young age he was drawn to photography, a passion that led him to study cinematography at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. He completed his course at FTII in 1978 and soon after began working in the Indian film industry.

Career

Singh’s early industry experience included work on Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978). He made his debut as a cinematographer in Punjabi cinema with Chann Pardesi (1981) and later established himself in mainstream Hindi films.

A significant chapter in his career began when Yash Chopra invited him to shoot the film Faasle. That collaboration continued across multiple high-profile projects, and Singh served as cinematographer on several Chopra productions over the following years. His credits with that team include Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), Darr (1993), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Mohabbatein (2000).

Singh’s visual work earned industry recognition. He received Filmfare Awards for Best Cinematography for Chandni (1990) and Darr (1994), and he won the Zee Cine Award for Best Cinematography for Dil To Pagal Hai (1998). In 2019 he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards.

Alongside his cinematography career, Singh expanded into directing. His first credited role as a director in Hindi film is listed as Nasibo (1994). He also directed films in Punjabi cinema, contributing to a revival of the industry in the 2000s when Punjabi filmmaking was limited. Notable Punjabi films he directed include Dil Apna Punjabi (2006), Mera Pind (2008) and Munde U.K. De (2009). As a director he combined cinematic polish and visual beauty with social themes, creating a template that influenced other Punjabi filmmakers.

Singh is associated with several iconic images in Indian cinema. One widely seen still credited to him is the mustard-field embrace of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), a shot that has become a lasting visual of that film.
