Early life and background

Manohar Singh was born in 1938 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, and grew up with ties to Delhi as his hometown. He trained formally in dramatic arts at the National School of Drama, completing his studies there in 1971. He later pursued journalism studies at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Career

Singh’s roots were firmly in theatre. He made his stage debut in 1968 with The Caucasian Chalk Circle and went on to perform in and direct many notable plays. His stage repertoire included classical and modern works such as Othello, King Lear (staged as Pagla Raja), Look Back in Anger, The Threepenny Opera and Himmat Mai, in which he took on a female role. He produced the play Qatl Ki Hawas in 1971.

After graduating from NSD, Singh joined the institution’s repertory activities and rose to become the second chief of the NSD Repertory Company in 1976. He led that company until 1988, combining artistic leadership with continued stage performance and direction.

Financial considerations and family responsibilities led him to expand into other media. He moved into television and Hindi films while maintaining a strong presence in theatre. His screen debut came with the political satire Kissa Kursi Ka, a film whose release became controversial around the Emergency period; the version that reached audiences appeared in 1977. On television he appeared in series such as Raag Durbari, Mullah Nasiruddin, Dard, Gumraah and Pal Chinn.

In cinema he was seen in films across the 1980s and 1990s, including New Delhi Times (1986), Main Azaad Hoon (1989), Daddy (1989) and Tirangaa (1992). His filmography also includes 1942: A Love Story and Everybody Says I’m Fine (2001). He contributed his voice to stage productions as well, providing narration for the annual Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra presentation Ram.

Recognition

In 1982 Manohar Singh was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, presented by India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. After his death, the National School of Drama established the Manohar Singh Smriti Puruskar to recognize young NSD graduates up to the age of 50, keeping his legacy alive in the training institution where he worked and taught.

Throughout his career Singh was known for his commanding stage presence and versatility, moving between classic Shakespearean parts and modern dramatic texts. He maintained a profile in television and film while continuing to shape theatre practice through his work at NSD. A 2003 photo exhibition at the Art Heritage gallery showcased his theatrical journey, displaying images from his first recorded play in 1968 through to his later work in The Threepenny Opera.

Personal life and death

Manohar Singh was married to Nirmal; the couple had three children, two daughters named Meena and Rachna and a son whose name is not recorded in the available material. Two months after his wife’s death, Singh became ill and after a prolonged illness he died on 14 November 2002 at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. He was 64. The reported cause of death was lung cancer.
