Early life and background

Manoj Sarkar was born on 12 January 1990 in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, India. He grew up in a modest household and began playing badminton at the age of five. As a child he competed in able-bodied inter-school and state-level events through the tenth grade before being encouraged to join para-badminton competition. A medical error in infancy led to a PPRP lower limb condition that places him in the SL-3 para-badminton classification.

Career

Sarkar transitioned to para-badminton competition in 2011 and quickly made his mark at national events. Early challenges included lack of sponsorship; he has recalled funding parts of his early international career personally and with family support. Over the following years he established himself on the world stage in both singles and doubles events.

He has stood on the podium at multiple major championships. At the Paralympic Games he won a bronze medal in the men’s singles event at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. At BWF Para-Badminton World Championships he has collected gold medals in men’s doubles (SL3 and SL3-SL4 pairings) including titles in Dortmund (2013), Stoke Mandeville (2015), and Basel (2019), along with silver and bronze medals in singles and mixed doubles across other editions. His continental and regional honours include medals at the Asian Para Games and the Asian Para-Badminton Championships, with a gold in men’s singles (SL3) at the 2016 Asian Para-Badminton Championships in Beijing.

Sarkar has also claimed gold at several international opens such as the Uganda Para-Badminton International (2017) and the Turkish Para-Badminton International (May 2018), and he took silver at events including the Irish Para-Badminton International (2016) and Thailand Para-Badminton International (2017). Over his career he has amassed dozens of medals at the highest levels of para-badminton and has reached world number one rankings in men’s singles SL3 and men’s doubles SL3-SL4.

He trains under coach Gaurav Khanna and has been supported by organizations such as the GoSports Foundation through its Para Champions Programme.
