Early life and background

Manpreet Singh Badal was born on 26 July 1962 in Village Badal, Punjab. He grew up in a family with a strong political tradition; his father, Gurdas Singh Badal, was a politician and parliamentarian. Manpreet attended The Doon School in Dehradun and completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History at St. Stephen's College, Delhi in 1984. He later obtained a graduate law degree from the University of London in 1987.

Career

Manpreet began his political career in the 1990s by joining the Shiromani Akali Dal. He won his first Legislative Assembly election from the Gidderbaha constituency in 1995 and retained that seat in subsequent elections. In 2007 he was appointed Punjab’s Finance and Planning Minister in Parkash Singh Badal’s government. Differences with his party led to his resignation from the finance ministry in September 2010 and his expulsion from the Shiromani Akali Dal the following month.

In January 2011 Manpreet launched the People’s Party of Punjab. He contested the 2012 state elections from Gidderbaha and Maur but was unsuccessful. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections he stood from Bathinda in an alliance with the Indian National Congress but lost to Harsimrat Kaur Badal. On 15 January 2016 he merged the People’s Party of Punjab into the Congress.

Manpreet returned to the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 2017, elected from Bathinda Urban, and was again appointed Finance Minister of Punjab, serving from March 2017 until March 2022.
