Manpreet Kaur (Shot Put) Biography

Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur rose from a small-town background to set national records, represent India at the Olympics, face and overcome a four-yeard

Early life and background

Manpreet Kaur was born on 6 July 1990 in Ambala, Haryana, and grew up in Sahauli in Patiala district. She is the eldest of three siblings. Her father encouraged her interest in athletics after watching relatives compete: one cousin was a 100m sprinter and another a discus thrower, and a sister-in-law also competed in shot put. Her father died when she was 13, and her family faced further hardship when her mother became paralysed in 2006.

After completing her schooling, Manpreet began competing as a junior athlete in 2006. Early in her athletic journey she trained as a 100m sprinter for a year before switching to shot put on the advice of a cousin who saw greater potential for her in the event. She took a job with the Indian Railways after finishing Class 12 and later completed her graduation.

Career

Manpreet established herself as one of India’s leading women shot putters over the next decade. She finished ninth at the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships and steadily improved her performances on the national circuit. In 2015 she broke a long-standing Indian record with a 17.96m throw at the National Open Athletics Championships in Kolkata, a mark that also helped her qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

At the Rio Olympics she threw 17.06m and finished 13th overall, narrowly missing the final. Manpreet continued to make gains, producing a notable season in 2017 that included gold-medal performances recorded at the Asian Grand Prix and the Asian Athletics Championships, with throws reported beyond 18 metres.

Later in 2017 she was handed a four-year suspension for anti-doping rule violations. During the period of the ban she continued to train, often with her husband and coach Karamjit Singh at training facilities in Patiala, conducting mock trials to maintain competition readiness. After serving the suspension she returned to competitive action and regained top national form.

In 2022 Manpreet improved on her own national benchmark by throwing 18.06m at the National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship in Chennai, a performance that met the qualification standard for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and brought her back into India’s athletics contingent for the event.

Public profile

Manpreet’s athletic life has been intertwined with family. She married fellow athlete and coach Karamjit Singh in 2008; he went on to coach her during later phases of her career. The couple have a daughter, Jasnoor Kaur. Manpreet’s training base has included facilities associated with Indian Railways and the National Institute of Sport in Patiala.

Throughout her career she has been noted for resilience—overcoming personal loss, a challenging family situation in youth, the interruption of a lengthy suspension, and the demands of returning to top-level competition.

Latest updates

After her return to competition following the suspension, Manpreet set a new national mark of 18.06m at the 2022 National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship, a throw that qualified her for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. At the time of that performance she was training under the guidance of her husband, Karamjit Singh, and continuing to represent India on the international stage.
