Early life and background

Manpreet Monica Singh was born on July 6 in Houston, Texas, and grew up in Bellaire, Texas. Raised in a Sikh family, she is the daughter of Attarjit Singh, an architect and businessman, and Hardeep Singh. She has a younger brother, Guru Singh. Singh attended Klein Forest High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Texas at Austin and later earning her law degree from South Texas College of Law. Her training also includes participation in the FBI Citizens Academy in 2013, a leadership programme at Harvard Business School in 2014, and the ABA Young Lawyers Division Leadership Academy between 2016 and 2017.

Career

Singh began practicing law in the United States after completing her formal legal education. Early in her career she became a certified mediator in 2001 and received the Southern District of Texas certification to practice in 2002. She also served as a certified Court Ad Litem. Over the years she has taught and led continuing legal education programs for a range of legal institutions, including the American Board of Trial Advocates, the University of Texas Law School, the State Bar of Texas, and the Harris County judiciary.

Her professional involvement extends beyond the courtroom. Singh has served on boards and in representative roles for organizations focused on civil liberties, education and community leadership. These include the Sikh Coalition, for which she joined the board after affiliating with the group in 2011, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, the Rice University Boniuk Center, the Texas Lyceum, and local chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates. She has also engaged with the Texas Grievance Committee, the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, and the South Asian Bar Association.

In 2017 and 2018 she received recognition for her work from legal and diversity organizations, including the South Asian Bar Association Distinguished Member Award and the Texas Diversity Champion Award from the State Bar of Texas. She has also been honoured with a Passion of Excellence Award.

Politics and judicial service

A member of the Democratic Party, Singh ran for judicial office in 2022 as the Democratic candidate for Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4. Following the general election, she was sworn in on January 6, 2023, as judge of that court. At the time of her swearing-in she highlighted her perspective as a first-generation immigrant and a woman, and expressed that representing Houston — a city she identifies closely with — is important to her.
